Stillness and Movement: Japanese-Inspired Floral Design

$50.00

Saturday May 10 | 11am | Meet in the Howell House Visitors Center

Looking for a simple and creative way to design with flowers? This workshop will explore a modern interpretation of the Japanese art of floral design known as Ikebana. In this hands-on workshop participants will get an introduction to the art of kenzan (pin frog) design. Using everyday vessels like bowls, teacups, and vases, each participant will be provided with seasonal flowers and the necessary tools to create and take home a unique arrangement that takes inspiration from the garden and pairs it with Japanese design principles.

The workshop will begin with a walk through the Garden followed by a discussion on the background of Japanese floral arranging. Participants will see a demonstration of a simple pin frog design, including many tips, tricks, and options for how fun designs can be created using vessels already on-hand.

Led by the Garden’s Creative Director, Caitlin Wedekind, the workshop will be an opportunity to learn from her approach to design, which uses the lens of the “artist’s eye.” Caitlin is an avid floral enthusiast who finds the beauty in the details of the natural world and delights in sharing that discovered, detailed beauty with those around her.
